Europa League qualification - not complicated at all!
March 24th, 2010 Over recent years we have become almost accustomed to the 7th placed side in the league qualifying for the UEFA Cup (or Europa Cup now), however if Foolham beat Spuds then either they or Pompey will be in the final of the FA cup.
The finalists of the FA cup used to qualify for the UEFA if the winners had already qualified for europe, is that still the case?
That would then leave 5th & 6th to qualify through league placings, but what if Pompey get to the final and either foolham or Liverpool win the Europa Cup?
The winners of that tournament qualify to retain it, and after Everton finished 4th, the 'dippers got in through the qualifying rounds as reigning champions of Europe, but uefa were supposed to have stopped countries getting an extra place in that way after this, so could it be that only the 5th placed side in the league this season qualifies for the Europa League by their league placing?
(at least its not complicated)
That rule only applies to the Champion's League. If, say, Fulham win the Europa League but finished 9th then they will qualify for the group stage of next season's competition as holders and there will still be another 3 English entrants - 5th and 6th in the league and then the FA Cup winners or runners-up (as long as they aren't Fulham!)
If Fulham win the Europa League but would have qualified anyway for the Europa League by, for example, winning the FA Cup. There won't be an extra English place in next season's competition so it would be 5th and 6th in the Prem, as the other qualifiers in this specific example, as the rags won the League Cup.
Simples!
