Rome wasn't built in a day. Furthermore, Mark Hughes wasn't on that job!!!

My public apology to Mark Hughes

I was one of the minority chanting at Mark "you dont know what your doing" when in hindsight he obviously did, Elano was knackered and Gelson was the only like for like substitition, i didnt get the whole story on the day just jumped on the detractors band wagon, for this i am sorry and ashamed and i vow to not jump on this band wagon again without prior knowledge of the whole story!

Mark Hughes is a Legend and Man City are lucky to have him as our manager at this stage of the game!

Any detractors object to this then you can kiss my a*se

To correct gazinios mum, Sturridge came on for Caicedo in the 58th minute, then Fernandes for Elano in the 74th, and finally Petrov for Robinho in the 84th. Zabaleta limped off leaving City with 10 men for the last 5 or 6 minutes. The problem with Hughes is he NEVER ever changes the outcome of a game by changing a system or via substitutes. The reason we cannot win away is because we haven't come back from a goal down to win a league game this season (though we did against Hamburg and Omonia away). I'd put the Hamburg comeback down to the crowd not Hughes, and as for Omonia, well you'd expect to overturn a team of waiters wouldn't you!

Strength and depth of squad tho steve, we aint got anyone who could come on and change a game! Benjani? Vas? Garrido? he plays the best side hes got and if he isnt theirs usually a reason i.e. cards or injuries! i just think given time hes can make a serious change at city, something thats loooong overdue, maybe he wont win us anything but the systems hes putting in place and the personelle hes bringing in are key to future success!

mum, how many times have i told you, dont contradict people who know what their talking about!

Cross purposes here. People are talking about two different matches.

In the important one, with just over ten minutes to go, when we desperately needed a goal to take us into extra time, Hughes took a defensive midfielder off. At last - thank God, he's finally come to his senses. No sorry, he's acting totally true to form - he brought on the headless chicken to help us thrust for goal.

With 6 minutes to go he took off Elano, our best player on the night and our best chance for another goal, and replaced him with Sturridge.

Nothing out of the ordinary then - just about what we've come to expect really. What was a surprise though was playing Ireland so deep that he was out of the game as far as supporting the attack was concerned. An interesting development, and one that we can expect to see much more of in the months and years to come.

Where do we stand in the Fair Play League?

I agree in part with gazinio's mum tho' this was the game against Hamburg. It is correct that those substitutions were made in that game. If Hughes is going to bring an another striker (i.e. Sturridge) who are you going to tqke off. I suggest that it had tobe a midfielder. Was it going to be Fernandez (who'd just come on) or Kompany who was playing brilliantly. No, it had to be Elano no matter how well he's playing

?

Where in the manual of successful European football competition tactics does it say that a team 3 - 1 down from the first leg, 2 - 1 up in the second leg, with ten minutes left to go, has to play with two defensive midfielders? (I know Kompany had pulled back, but where does it say that you have to have four across the back either?)

It's me isn't it? I'm the only City fan in the world who thinks that in those circumstances you should drop everything and go for it. What's this? Flecks! Flecks at the side of my mouth. Flecks of - foam?

Wigan Blue, Kompany was playing by then at CB (as you acknowledge, so why pretend there were two defensive mids?) replacing Dunne, who was a complete liability. We were also playing 3 at the back as Richards was playing by then as an auxiliary CF.

So we had to have someone there with fresh legs to defend the back 3 and win the ball back. You can't win without it, you know!
